Philharmonia Mundi Orchestra of Montreal

An orchestra with an history, and a new personality

Funded 24 years ago by CAMMAC members as the CAMMAC-Montreal Symphony Orchestra, it became the most successful CAMMAC-Montreal's activity. Proud of these 24 years and its recent successes, the Orchestra looks forward for new challenges, and got an autonomus legal identity now known as: Philharmonia Mundi Orchestra of Montreal. The same slogan stay: For the pleasure to play music together.

The Orchestra consists of more than 50 musicians who rehearse every week from September to May. Under the skillful management of Jean-Pascal Hamelin, the orchestra performs several times throughout the year.

Musical Director: Jean-Pascal Hamelin

Jean-Pascal Hamelin is the conductor and musical director of the Philharmonia Mundi Orchestra of Montreal (since June 2005), and the Orchestre Symphonique des Jeunes de Sherbrooke (September 2006). He was recently a guest conductor of the Orchestre Symphonique de Trois-Rivières (October 2006).

Mr. Hamelin has studied conducting with Raffi Armenian at the Conservatoire de Musique du Québec in Montréal (2002-2005), and with Jean-François Rivest and Paolo Bellomia at the Université de Montréal.  He has attended a number of conducting workshops in the United States and Europe, including those taught by Harold Farberman at Bard College, NY, and Gianluigi Gelmetti at the Academy Chigiana in Sienna, Italy.

Born in Montréal in 1974, Jean-Pascal Hamelin began his piano studies at the Ecole Vincent-d'Indy and then at McGill University with Charles Reiner, earning a bachelor’s degree in music in 1997. He continued his piano studies in New York with Edna Golandsky and Dorothy Taubman.

Mr. Hamelin is also artistic director and co-founder of Palexa records (1996). He was an assistant producer at Radio-Canada in 2000-2001, where he regularly appeared as classical music commentator until 2005.

An enthusiastic and creative person, he has set a goal of continuing to expand the repertoire of the Orchestra by in-depth work on both technical and musical aspects.

Rehearsals

The Orchestra rehearse each Thursday, from 7:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

The rehearsals take place in the basement of Église St-Charles-Garnier, 1191 Sauvé est. (corner of Georges Baril, a 7-8 minutes walk from Sauvé Métro station).

All players are welcome (up to the point where each section is filled.) Bring your own music stand and instrument! A 75$ (50$ for students) membership is required.
