Description of Activities
October 1st, 2006 - Choral-Orchestral reading of Missa Popularis (Jazz Mass)
Come and Celebrate
World Music Day
with CAMMAC Ottawa-Gatineau!
Join us for a Reading of Part of Claus Bantzer's Jazz Mass for Choir and Jazz Combo
Directed by Robert Filion
Sunday October 1st, 1:30-4:30 p.m.
St. Matthias Anglican Church, Parkdale and the Queensway (Bus #14; Parking At Rear)
Free for CAMMAC Members, $8 Non-Members
Claus Bantzer’s Missa Popularis/Jazz Mass captures, persuades and inspires for the reason that he brings together the styles of a polyphonic choir and monophonic expressive melismatics alternatingly, with a jazz not forced or ingratiating, to create a unified work. The Premiere of Missa Popularis was held at the 155th North German Broadcasting Corporation’s Jazz Workshop on November 27th 1980. We will be working on the last movement of the mass.
Robert Filion directs the Choeur classique de l’Outaouais, the Ottawa Children’s Chamber Choir and the vocal ensembles of the Centre d'excellence artistique De La Salle. His choirs are renowned in Canada and internationally. Last May, the senior vocal ensemble from De La Salle took first prize in CBC Radio’s National Competition for Amateur Choirs.
Instruments Needed for Jazz Combo: Bass, Drums, Soprano Sax . Amelie Langlois to be featured on piano.

Oct. 14 & 29, 2006 - Beginner Sight Reading
EAR TRAINING AND SIGHT SINGING BASICS
St. Matthias’ Anglican Church 555 Parkdale Avenue (at Queensway)
Saturday, October 14, 2006. 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.
PART I: Introducing basic ear training skills
In this basic ear training workshop, we will be exploring the concept of tonality. Participants will learn to identify the tonic (or key-note) of simple melodies, and gain some understanding of how the elements of music come together around this key-note. Solfège will be introduced and will serve as a base to explore intervals and triads present within major keys, various scale singing exercises and the dictation of simple melodies.
Sunday October 29, 2006 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
PART II: Introducing basic sight-singing skills
In this introductory sight-singing workshop, participants will be using the “moveable doh” sight reading system, building on the bases from the ear-training workshop. Written exercises and melodies will be provided to enable the participants to translate the written symbols into vocal sound. In order to do this, we will prioritize analysis, solfège, and listening skills, such as tonic identification.
Participants are asked to please bring pencils and erasers to these workshops.
Advance registration recommended (form available at back of Newsletter).
Info: Margaret, 613-733-0182
2 sessions: Members - $20 in advance; $25 at the door Non-members - $30 preregistered; $35 at the door

Since coming to Ottawa in 1999, she has sung with the Cantata Singers, has been assistant director for Le Choeur Classique de l’Outaouais and director of the Ottawa Baha’i choir. She has taught ear training as a teacher’s assistant at Carleton University and has offered workshops to members of the choirs she has conducted. October 22, 2006 - Welsh Music Workshop
Wales – Land of Song
Leader: Alan Thomas
Sunday, 22 October 2006 2:00-5:00 pm
St. Matthias’ Anglican Church
555 Parkdale Avenue (at Queensway)
Advance registration: CAMMAC members $10, non-members $15. At the door: $15 and $20.
The workshop, a celebration of Welsh history, language, and music, will include traditional songs, for example, The Ash Grove, All Through the Night, Men of Harlach, and well-known Welsh hymns such as Cwm Rhondda. It will feature the Cantorion Cerdd Dant, a women’s vocal ensemble that performs penillion (a tradition of singing an improvised melody and words to a familiar folk tune), accompanist Mary Muckle, harpist, and John Griffiths, tenor. Be prepared to sing in English and, after a brief language lesson, in Welsh, and to enjoy Alan Thomas’s stories of Wales, its people and music.
Alan Thomas, born in Wales and a graduate of the Universities of Manchester and Reading, has held teaching posts as Director of Music in high schools in England and Canada. Since 1977 he has been Organist and Choir Director at Westminster Presbyterian Church. He was guest conductor of the Parkdale Orchestra for three years and will play an organ concerto and a harpsichord concerto with them next spring. He is very active with the Welsh Society in Ottawa and in international Welsh music festivals. CAMMAC members and many others have enjoyed rehearsing Come Sing Messiah choruses under Mr. Thomas’s delightful direction for several years. More recently they have risen early for his “Almost Sunrise” singing on Easter Sunday.

Saturday, November 4, 2006, 2:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Intermediate sight-singing workshop with Marie-Lynne Sauvé for singers and choristers. Participants in this intermediate workshop are expected to have some experience with sight-singing and some basic theory knowledge, especially in identifying tonalities, triads and intervals.
After introducing the “moveable doh” sight-reading system, we will sight-sing melodies in major and minor keys that include modulations, in single and multi-part settings. As in the previous workshop, we will prioritize analysis, solfège, and listening skills. Also, atonal exercises will be introduced, to sing and identify intervals in these contexts.
