A silver “lead” called a stylus is used to etch the drawing on paper coated
with a white clay preparation.
With each stroke of the stylus, a small
amount of the silver is transferred onto the paper. Shadows and darks are
carefully built up with many strokes.
Over time, the silver oxidizes to
a lovely warm burnished color. The delicacy of the line is particularly
suited for drawings of children.
The process dates from the early
Renaissance and
was widely used by Leonardo da Vinci in his sketchbooks.
